FREE guided tours of the ancient Zubboli typography
By appointment it is possible to visit our ancient typography and bookbinding workshop. A unique experience of immersion in the ancient techniques of processing paper and leather with real craftsmen.
Program of the visit
Your visit will be followed by Marco Zubboli, who has worked for over 30 years in the family business, located in Via San Gregorio, 3 in the center of Assisi.
Inside the workshop you will find our skilled artisans who, by means of the ancient art, manually bind and with the frame sew the notebooks with needle and thread.
This is the heart of bookbinding and restoration of books where, always manually, you also cut the paper that will then be sewn using the frame as it once was.
Here the craftsman also creates covers in leather, canvas and paper.
Then you will see all the procedures of the binding and the incisions through gilding done hot with gold foils using old special tools
Then we move on to the typography room where we will illustrate the machines and the techniques for composing the lines of the script using movable characters.
Then we will go to the explanation of the machines by switching on one of the two historical printers where we will see all the phases.
After the visit you can admire the finished products and you can buy them at the Zubboli Bookshop located in Piazza del Comune, 18 in Assisi.
Visit times
- From Monday to Friday from 10.00 am to 12.00 am and in the afternoon from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
- Saturday from 10.00 to 12.00.
- On Sunday the laboratory is closed but the Zubboli Library is open.
